What’s Included in a Cruise Fare?

One of the biggest reasons travelers love cruising is how much is already included in the price. It’s one of the easiest ways to budget for a vacation—because so many of your essentials are covered upfront.

But a common question I hear is:
“What exactly is included in a cruise fare?”

Let’s break it down.

What’s Typically Included

When you book a cruise, your base fare usually covers:

  • Your stateroom accommodations

  • Most meals throughout the day (including main dining rooms and buffets)

  • Snacks and casual dining options

  • Entertainment and live shows

  • Onboard activities (think trivia, pools, fitness centers, and more)

  • Kids and teen clubs on family-friendly cruise lines

This built-in value is what makes cruising such an appealing option for so many travelers.

What About Drinks?

Most cruises include basic beverages like:

  • Water

  • Coffee and tea

  • Juice (typically at breakfast)

  • Lemonade (on select cruise lines)

These are usually available in dining areas and beverage stations throughout the ship.

Pro Tip: Bring a refillable water bottle or tumbler. It makes it easy to stay hydrated whether you’re relaxing onboard or heading out for a day in port.

Taxes, Fees & Gratuities

Your total cruise cost will also include:

  • Port fees and government taxes – Required charges based on the destinations you visit

  • Gratuities (tips) – Often added daily to your onboard account for crew members who take care of you

Some cruise lines include gratuities in the fare, while others add them separately—this is something I always review with my clients ahead of time so there are no surprises.

Optional Add-Ons

While a lot is included, there are also extras you can choose to enhance your experience:

  • Specialty dining restaurants

  • Shore excursions in port

  • Spa treatments and services

  • Internet/Wi-Fi packages

  • Beverage packages (soda or alcohol)

Drink packages, in particular, can be a great value for some travelers—but not everyone needs one. I always help my clients decide if it makes sense based on their travel style.

Don’t Skip Travel Protection

Travel insurance is one of the most important things to consider when booking a cruise.

Many cruise lines offer their own plans, but independent policies can sometimes provide more comprehensive coverage. Having the right protection in place gives you peace of mind in case something unexpected happens before or during your trip.

The Best Part About Cruising

Cruising is flexible—you can enjoy everything that’s already included or customize your experience with add-ons that matter most to you.

Whether you want a simple, stress-free getaway or a fully upgraded vacation experience, there’s a cruise that fits your style.
