What is Margaritaville at Sea? (And Why It’s Not Your Typical Cruise Line)

I just got back from my first sailing on Margaritaville at Sea Islander—and I’ll say it right up front… I’ll absolutely be sailing again.
From the moment you step onboard, it feels like you’ve officially left reality behind and entered full-on island time. Think “changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes” kind of vibe. No stress, no strict schedules—just good music, good food, and that laid-back, flip-flop state of mind.
My Biggest Takeaway
This cruise is about as close as you can get to living the Buffett lifestyle at sea.
Whether you’re sipping something frozen, listening to live music, or just staring out at the water doing absolutely nothing… it’s easy to settle in and think, yeah… I could get used to this.
If you’ve ever wished you could bottle up that “toes in the sand, drink in your hand, no worries in the world” feeling—Margaritaville at Sea is basically that… just floating.
Inspired by the laid-back lifestyle of Jimmy Buffett, this cruise line is all about easygoing fun, great music, and doing vacation your way. No pressure, no pretense—just a chance to escape for a few days and truly relax.
A Newer Cruise Line with a Fun Backstory
Margaritaville at Sea is a newer player in the cruise world, officially launching in 2022 when Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line was reimagined into a fully themed Margaritaville experience.
Instead of building ships from scratch, they took existing vessels and completely transformed them—Buffett style.
Where Did the Ships Come From?
Here’s where it gets interesting.
The ship I sailed on—Margaritaville at Sea Islander—originally sailed as Costa Atlantica for Costa Cruises and was built in 2000.
In 2024, she underwent a full refurbishment and was reintroduced as the Islander with an entirely new personality.
Same ship… completely different vibe.
The “Buffett-Style” Transformation
When Margaritaville takes over a ship, they don’t just rebrand it—they fully commit to the experience.
You’ll find:
Tropical colors and beachy décor
Flip-flop-friendly spaces
Bars with names you’ll recognize (hello, 5 o’Clock Somewhere)
Live music and that signature island sound
Cheeseburgers in Paradise (yes—really, and they are so good… 10 fins up!)
Even the atrium, restaurants, and pool decks are redesigned to feel more like a relaxed beach resort than a traditional cruise ship.
What the Experience Feels Like
Let’s set expectations clearly—because this part matters.
This is not a luxury cruise line.
And honestly? That’s kind of the whole point.
Margaritaville at Sea is:
Fun, casual, and unpretentious
Come-as-you-are (flip flops are basically the dress code)
Flexible—you can do as much or as little as you want
Perfect for a quick, easy getaway without overthinking it
You’ll see people dancing by the pool, grabbing a drink, enjoying live music… or simply relaxing and watching the ocean go by.
It’s very much a “you do you” kind of vacation.
Who This Cruise Is Perfect For
This cruise is a great fit if you:
Want a short, stress-free getaway
Love a relaxed, beachy atmosphere
Don’t care about formal dress codes
Just want to unplug and have fun
If you’re looking for luxury, white-glove service, and upscale everything—this probably isn’t your cruise.
But if you’re looking for a few days to reset, recharge, and enjoy yourself?
You’ll feel right at home.
Fins Up
Margaritaville at Sea isn’t trying to compete with luxury cruise lines—and that’s exactly why people love it.
It’s simple. It’s fun. It’s easy.
Sometimes you don’t need over-the-top… you just need a few days away.
And that’s exactly what this delivers.
Fins up—and more to come from my sailing on the Islander!
