5 Things to Do in Seattle Before Your Alaska Cruise

If you’re planning an Alaska cruise departing from Seattle, consider arriving a couple of days early to experience some of the incredible sights this vibrant city has to offer before embarkation day. Not only does arriving early give you extra time to explore, but it’s also a great way to adjust if you’re traveling from a different time zone.
Seattle is full of adventure, incredible food, and iconic attractions. Here are five recommendations from someone who’s experienced it firsthand!
1. Visit Chihuly Garden and Glass
A visit to Chihuly Garden and Glass is truly unforgettable. The gardens are stunning, and the hand-blown glass sculptures feel as though they naturally belong among the flowers and greenery.
Inside, you’ll find galleries featuring seasonal exhibits alongside more than 40 years of Dale Chihuly’s work, showcasing the evolution of his artistry over time. Be sure not to miss the spectacular Glasshouse, home to a breathtaking 100-foot-long suspended sculpture created specifically for that space.
2. Have Lunch at the Top of the Space Needle
No trip to Seattle is complete without visiting the iconic Space Needle. Enjoy lunch while taking in panoramic views of the city, Puget Sound, and—on a clear day—beautiful Mt. Rainier.
At the top, you’ll find two observation levels, including the famous rotating glass floor experience. While the rotating floor may not be for everyone, the incredible views alone make this stop well worth it!
3. Explore Pike Place Market
Pike Place Market is one of Seattle’s most famous attractions, and it’s easy to see why. If you’re staying nearby, I highly recommend heading there early in the morning before the crowds arrive.
While you’re there:
Visit the original Starbucks location (just be prepared for a long line at almost any hour).
Grab a pastry from Piroshky Piroshky.
Sample fresh cheese curds from Beecher's Handmade Cheese.
Watch the famous fish-throwing show at Pike Place Fish Market.
And if you’re feeling adventurous, head down the stairs to the famous Gum Wall—now spanning several walls and covered in colorful chewing gum from visitors around the world.
4. Catch a Seattle Mariners Game
Alaska cruise season runs from May through September, which also happens to fall right in the middle of Major League Baseball season. If you’re a baseball fan, consider catching a game featuring the Seattle Mariners while you’re in town. It’s a fun way to spend an evening before setting sail.
5. Visit the Seattle Aquarium & Ride the Seattle Great Wheel
If you’re traveling with kids, the Seattle Aquarium and the Seattle Great Wheel are excellent additions to your itinerary.
The aquarium offers a variety of marine exhibits and interactive presentations throughout the day, both inside the pavilion and along the waterfront piers outside. Pair that with a ride on the Seattle Great Wheel for beautiful waterfront views and a memorable family-friendly experience.
