Welcome Aboard! Your Disney Cruise Adventure Begins

A First-Timer’s Guide to Disney Cruise Line

You’ve cleared security, your documents have been reviewed, and your first official cruise photos have been taken.

Now it’s time.

As you step onboard, smiling Disney Cruise Line Cast Members gather in the atrium, and suddenly you hear it:

“Disney Cruise Line would like to welcome the Smith Family onboard!”

In that moment, it all becomes real—and magical.

First Things First: Let’s Eat

Most guests board between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., and the first instinct for many is to head straight to the buffet or pool deck.

While that’s a great option, my personal favorite first stop is the open dining room. Sitting down for a leisurely lunch helps our family reset after the hustle of embarkation and ease into cruise mode. It’s calm, air-conditioned, and a perfect place to regroup—especially while you’re still carrying your bags.

After lunch, you’ll complete the mandatory safety drill. Using the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App, each guest assigned to your stateroom checks in at their designated Assembly Station. A safety video will also play throughout the ship and on stateroom TVs.

Once that’s complete, your vacation truly begins.

Explore the Ship Early

Since this is your first Disney cruise, take time on embarkation day to explore.

Learning the layout early saves time later. You’ll quickly figure out:

  • Where the pools and quick-service dining are

  • Which decks house theaters, kids clubs, and lounges

  • The easiest routes between your stateroom and favorite spots

Many onboard spaces host open houses during embarkation afternoon, including:

  • Kids Clubs

  • Tween and Teen spaces

  • The spa and fitness center

You can also join official ship tours listed in the Navigator App to learn behind-the-scenes details and fun facts about your ship.

Stop by Guest Services

As a first-time cruiser, your advance booking window is shorter than repeat guests—but here’s the good news:

“Full” doesn’t always mean full.

Some activities that appeared unavailable online may have openings once you’re onboard. Guest Services is the place to check for:

  • Character experiences

  • Tastings or onboard activities

  • Dining time adjustments

If you hoped to book Palo or Remy, ask Guest Services right away where to inquire about openings—Disney often holds back limited availability for onboard booking.

Other Guest Services tasks include:

  • Adding Disney Gift Cards to your onboard account

  • Finalizing gratuities

  • Borrowing strollers (limited availability)

Lines can be long, so if possible, divide and conquer—one adult handles Guest Services while another explores with the kids or heads to the pool.

Communicating Onboard

Wi-Fi packages are available for purchase, but they can add up quickly. The good news? You do not need Wi-Fi to use the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App.

The app allows:

  • Free onboard messaging with your travel party

  • Access to daily schedules and entertainment

  • Browsing menus and activity details

To minimize Wi-Fi usage:

  • Download books, movies, and apps before leaving home

  • Upload photos and emails while in port

  • Use the Navigator App to plan daily activities rather than overscheduling

On my first Disney cruise, I tried to do everything. On a seven-night sailing, I barely scratched the surface. On later cruises, I learned to check the Navigator App each morning and choose what felt right that day—and I ended up doing more and enjoying it more.

Head to Your Stateroom

Once the announcement is made that staterooms are ready (usually between 1:30–2:00 p.m.), you can head to your room and drop off carry-on bags.

Sometimes rooms are available even earlier—if the hallway stanchions are still up, Cast Members are finishing preparations, so give them a little time.

Even if your luggage hasn’t arrived yet, you can:

  • Store bags under the bed

  • Begin organizing your space

  • Set up door decorations

Your DisneyBand+ or Key to the World card acts as:

  • Your stateroom key

  • Your boarding pass

  • Your onboard charge card

Charging privileges can be restricted for kids—an excellent way to avoid surprise smoothie orders.

Don’t Forget to Decorate Your Door

Decorating your stateroom door is a beloved Disney Cruise tradition—especially for first-time cruisers.

It helps you:

  • Spot your room easily

  • Celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, or first cruises

  • Start a tradition that grows with every sailing

Quick tip: Stateroom doors are metal, so bring magnetic decorations. Tape and adhesives aren’t allowed.

Adding a new decoration each cruise makes for an inexpensive souvenir and a fun family ritual.
