Walt Disney World is filled with magic, wonder, and excitement, but for families traveling with young children, it can also bring long lines, overstimulation, and, yes, plenty of meltdowns.

After decades of Disney trips and countless visits as both a kid and a parent, I’ve learned that a little planning can make all the difference.

On our most recent visit, my family tackled Walt Disney World in just 48 hours with two children under five. And yes—you can do it, too!

Starting Our Disney Vacation with a Little Character Magic

We left on the first flight of the day on a Wednesday morning, and truly, that’s my favorite way to start a vacation. I love arriving early enough to have the entire day ahead of us. You can relax by the pool, shop at Disney Springs, or, in our case, start the trip with an early dinner at Chef Mickey’s.

Beginning our vacation with a character dinner gave us a chance to fill up on delicious food—including plenty of macaroni and cheese and Mickey-themed treats—while getting photos and autographs with classic Disney Characters like Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and friends.

For families with little ones, I especially love this strategy because it gives the kids an opportunity to meet some favorite characters without spending valuable park time waiting in character lines.

Day 1: Magic Kingdom

First, you need to decide what kind of parkgoer your family is going to be.

Are you going to rope drop and stay all day so you can enjoy the nighttime entertainment? Or will you start early, take a midday break at your resort, and return later for the evening festivities?

Because we had such limited time, we chose to stay all day.

Was it exhausting? Yes.

Was it absolutely worth it? Also yes.

Our goal was to make the most of every minute while still keeping the day manageable for two little ones.

My Disney Survival Essentials for Little Ones

There are a few things I wouldn't want to tackle a full Magic Kingdom day without:

Double stroller
Lightning Lane Multi Pass
Portable charger
Snacks
Portable fan

And I know what you’re thinking: Do you really need Lightning Lane Multi Pass?

For our family, the answer is yes!

Here’s why: the difference between waiting in a 10-minute line and a 30-minute line can feel enormous when you have little kids. Reducing the amount of time spent standing in lines helped us keep everyone happier—and allowed us to experience more attractions during our limited time in the park.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass also allows you to choose up to three eligible experiences and arrival windows in advance, with opportunities to make additional selections during your park day, subject to availability.

Starting in Fantasyland

Fantasyland was our first stop, and it’s such a great place to begin a Magic Kingdom day with young children.

Our morning included:

“it’s a small world”
Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid
Storybook Circus, where Dumbo’s shaded interactive play area gave everyone a welcome break from the heat
The Barnstormer, which became my two-year-old’s very first roller coaster!

There’s something pretty special about watching your child experience a Disney attraction for the first time—especially when that first involves a roller coaster.

Time to Refuel in Tomorrowland

Next up: lunch!

We stopped at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café in Tomorrowland for a quick meal, a chance to rest our legs, and some much-needed refueling.

And according to my kids, the macaroni and cheese was out of this world!

A quick-service lunch worked perfectly for our schedule because we could eat, recharge, and get back to exploring without committing to another lengthy sit-down meal in the middle of our park day.

More Magic in the Afternoon

After lunch, we kept exploring Magic Kingdom and enjoyed:

The Magic Carpets of Aladdin
Country Bear Musical Jamboree
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin

Country Bear Musical Jamboree is a fun indoor break from the Florida weather, featuring the beloved Country Bears performing reinterpreted Disney songs in their signature country style.

And Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin gave us another attraction the whole family could enjoy together.

Dinner with Friends from the Hundred Acre Wood

We finished our park day with dinner at The Crystal Palace, where a buffet of American favorites comes with visits from some very special friends from the Hundred Acre Wood.

Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, and Eeyore made their way around the restaurant, giving us another opportunity for character hugs, photos, and memories without having to fit additional character lines into our park day.

After dinner, we found seats not far from the restaurant and settled in to enjoy Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away.

The nighttime parade brings illuminated floats and favorite Disney and Pixar stories to life as they make their way through Magic Kingdom.

After such a full day, there was no better way to end our first park day than watching favorite characters float by and wishing them goodnight.

Yes, You Can Do Disney with Little Ones!

Taking two children under five to Walt Disney World for a whirlwind trip may sound intimidating, but it can absolutely be done.

The key isn't trying to do everything. It's having a plan, knowing your family's priorities, and giving yourself the tools to make the day easier.

For us, that meant a stroller, Lightning Lane Multi Pass, plenty of snacks, strategic meals, and a willingness to keep going when everyone was having fun.
