How Does Disney Cruise Line Handle Food Allergies?

Who doesn’t love going out to eat? But when you have a food allergy or dietary restriction, dining out can be difficult—and often frustrating. Add traveling to the mix, and finding food you can safely enjoy can become even more challenging.
My husband is gluten intolerant and lactose sensitive, so I’m speaking from personal experience. He often doesn’t even want to bother going out to eat because he doesn’t want to feel like an inconvenience or have to ask the server a long list of questions before ordering.
We’ve even been to restaurants where he was handed a binder containing a spreadsheet of all the ingredients in each meal. He then had to look through it and figure out for himself what he could eat.
I’m sure some of you can relate.
But our experience with Disney Cruise Line has been very different.
Dietary Needs Begin With Your Reservation
One of the things our family appreciates about Disney Cruise Line is the attention given to guests with special dietary needs.
When you book your cruise, your Wishes Family Travel advisor can help make sure your dietary needs are noted on your reservation. That means Disney Cruise Line can be aware of those needs before you even sit down for your first dinner.
Disney Cruise Line uses rotational dining, which means you rotate through three main dining restaurants during your cruise. One of the best parts? Your dining service team rotates with you.
For example, on a five-night sailing aboard the Disney Destiny, your dining rotation might include:
Pride Lands: Feast of The Lion King
Worlds of Marvel
1923
Pride Lands: Feast of The Lion King
1923
While the restaurant changes, your service team stays with you throughout the cruise. This allows them to get to know your family, your preferences, and your dietary needs.
What Happens at Dinner?
On the first evening, your server can help you understand which menu items may work with your dietary restrictions and discuss available options.
You may also have the opportunity to order your meal for the following evening ahead of time. This allows the dining team additional time to prepare for your needs and can make the next evening’s dining experience easier.
Then, you continue that same pattern throughout your cruise.
For someone who is accustomed to asking a long list of questions every time they dine at a new restaurant, having a service team that already knows your needs can make dining feel much more comfortable.
What About Breakfast and the Buffet?
For breakfast, you can choose a sit-down restaurant when available or enjoy the buffet aboard your ship, such as Marceline Market or Cabanas, depending on the ship.
My family likes to eat at the buffet for breakfast, and this is where Disney Cruise Line has made things particularly easy for us.
For example, my husband loves gluten-free Mickey waffles. He places his order ahead of time with our server. The next morning, he goes to the appropriate dining location and lets a Cast Member know that he placed an order in advance.
While his food is being prepared, the rest of us can get settled and enjoy breakfast.
Easy peasy!
It’s a small detail, but when you’re traveling with dietary restrictions, having those details handled ahead of time can make a big difference.
What About Disney’s Island Destinations?
You may be wondering: What happens when you get off the ship at one of Disney’s island destinations?
Again, Disney Cruise Line may be able to help you plan ahead.
Depending on your itinerary and dietary needs, your dining team can discuss options for lunch at Disney’s island destinations and let you know where and how to pick up an allergy-friendly or special-diet meal.
On our visits, this has allowed us to enjoy our day ashore without spending lunchtime trying to figure out what my husband can eat.
A More Relaxing Way to Vacation With Dietary Restrictions
So, there you have it.
No binders of ingredients for us to sort through on our own. No feeling like we are inconveniencing someone by asking questions. Instead, we’ve experienced a dining team that takes the time to understand our needs and help us navigate our options.
Disney Cruise Line is one of our family’s favorite ways to vacation for many reasons, but we especially appreciate the attention to detail when it comes to special dietary needs.
Of course, food allergies and dietary needs vary from person to person. Guests with food allergies should always discuss their individual needs directly with Disney Cruise Line and the dining team onboard rather than assuming a particular dish or preparation method will be appropriate for them.
