One of the things I love most about Disney Cruise Line is that every sailing can be a little different. Some guests simply show up and enjoy everything included onboard, while others love adding extra touches that make their vacation even more memorable. The best part? None of these traditions are required to have an amazing cruise. I've sailed with elaborate door decorations and gift exchanges, and I've also sailed without doing any of them. They're simply fun options if you enjoy getting creative and adding a little extra Disney magic to your vacation.

Decorating Your Stateroom Door

Did you know that Disney Cruise Line stateroom doors are magnetic? Many guests decorate their doors with favorite Disney characters, seasonal themes, itinerary-inspired designs, or reminders of how many Disney cruises they've sailed. Not only is it a fun way to personalize your "home away from home," but it also makes it much easier to spot your room among rows of identical doors.

If you've ever stood in a hallway wondering, "Wait…is this our room?" you're not alone! Door decorations are especially helpful for younger cruisers. Kids quickly learn to recognize their door, and decorating together can be a fun activity while parents unpack and settle in.

Magnets are easy to find on Amazon and Etsy, and some families even create their own personalized designs. It's one of those simple touches that adds a little extra magic to your cruise.

Other Fun Door Decorations

As you walk the hallways onboard, you'll probably notice plenty of creative displays outside staterooms. Guests often use their doors to interact with fellow cruisers and spread a little fun throughout the voyage.

Some common things you may see include:

· Pin boards with extra Disney pins available for trading.

· Treat holders stocked with candy or small surprises.

· Fish Extenders, which are hanging organizers used for gift exchanges.

These little touches help create the welcoming community atmosphere that Disney Cruise Line is known for.

What Is a Fish Extender?

Fish Extenders are one of the most beloved traditions among Disney cruisers. Think of them as Christmas stockings at sea.

Guests join organized groups before sailing and are assigned a handful of participating staterooms. Each family prepares small gifts and secretly delivers them throughout the cruise by placing them in the hanging pockets outside each cabin.

Coming back to your room after a day in port and discovering little surprises waiting for you is always so much fun. It creates a wonderful sense of community among fellow cruisers.

Fish Extenders do require some planning, time, and budget since you're preparing gifts for multiple families, which is why many guests choose to participate only occasionally.

Depending on the sailing there may be adult-only fish extender groups, Christmas ornament exchanges, and more!

What Is Pixie Dusting?

Personally, while I have done a few, I don't usually participate in formal Fish Extender groups. Instead, I enjoy what Disney cruisers call “pixie dusting.”

Pixie dusting is the practice of anonymously surprising fellow guests with small treats or gifts during the cruise. There are no sign-ups, assigned groups, or expectations. It's simply about spreading a little extra kindness and magic.

Guests might leave stickers, candy, rubber ducks, magnets, pins, friendship bracelets, or other small surprises outside another stateroom door. The recipient never knows who left the gift and that's part of the fun! It's spontaneous, simple, and a wonderful reminder of how special the Disney Cruise Line community can be.

Important Door Decorating Rules

Disney Cruise Line recently updated its decorating policies, so it's important to know the guidelines before packing your decorations.

DO:

✔ Use magnets to attach decorations.

✔ Keep decorations contained to your stateroom door.

✔ Choose items that aren't valuable or irreplaceable.

DON'T:

✘ Use tape, gel adhesives, or other sticky products.

✘ Hang over-the-door organizers.

✘ Decorate hallway walls or ceilings.

✘ Use valuable items that could be lost or damaged.

Guests who damage stateroom doors may be charged a $100 repair fee, so it's always best to follow Disney's current policies.

Should You Join Your Sailing's Facebook Group?

Almost every Disney Cruise Line sailing has an unofficial Facebook group, and they can be a lot of fun. These groups are great places to:

· Meet other families.

· Find Fish Extender groups.

· Share excitement before the cruise.

· Ask general questions.

That said, it's important to remember that these groups are made up of fellow guests, not trained Disney Cruise Line experts. Information shared there can sometimes be outdated, incomplete, or simply incorrect. Like many online communities, discussions can occasionally focus heavily on complaints or opinions that don't always reflect the overall experience.

I typically recommend using sailing groups for inspiration, community, and excitement, but not as your primary source of information. That's what I'm here for!
