Top 10 Reasons to Participate in a runDisney Weekend

Even though I wouldn’t consider myself a “runner” by any stretch, I absolutely love runDisney weekends. There’s just something about the energy, the excitement, and the magic that makes them so special. So far, I’ve participated in five runDisney weekends (seven races total!), and each one has been unique. No matter how early the wake-up call or how tired I am by the end, I always leave already thinking about when I can come back.
Through my own experiences, I’ve picked up plenty of tips and insights, not just for runners, but for spectators too, because the fun extends far beyond the course. Whether you’re considering signing up for your first race or cheering someone on from the sidelines, a runDisney weekend is something I think everyone should experience at least once. Here are my Top 10 Reasons to Participate in a runDisney weekend!
1. Unmatched Camaraderie
This has been my Number One reason since day 1. There’s something special about thousands of runners, Cast Members, characters, family, and friends, cheering each other on through every mile. Whether it’s your first 5K or your tenth half marathon, the encouragement from fellow participants, volunteers, and spectators creates an incredibly uplifting atmosphere. After the races, participants wear their medals throughout the parks and to the airports. It’s an unspoken tradition. All throughout the day, you will be congratulated on your accomplishment of going out there and giving it your all.
2. Exclusive Merchandise
runDisney merch is next level. runDisney merch is not sold in the parks. From race-specific apparel to collectible pins and gear to challenge memorabilia, these items are only available during race weekends making them a fun (and sometimes coveted!) way to remember your accomplishment. Be on the lookout for exclusive partnerships too!
3. Run Through the Parks
How often do you get to jog down Main Street, U.S.A. or through EPCOT at sunrise? When can you ever run through Hollywood Studios behind the Tower of Terror and under the beautiful lights of Sunset Blvd in the middle of the night? Who ever thought they could ride a roller coaster in Animal Kingdom in the middle of a marathon!? The courses take you through iconic Disney parks and behind-the-scenes areas you don’t normally get to see.
4. Character Photo Opportunities
Along the course, you’ll find rare character sightings and themed photo ops. These are characters that typically do not meet in the parks, classic characters in outfits we don’t normally see day-to-day in Disney, duos that do not normally meet (or at all), and characters that represent the theme of the race. Some of my personal favorites from my races include:
· Pain and Panic from Hercules
· Mushu from Mulan
· Quasimodo and Esmerelda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame
· Captain Jack and Captain Barbosa from Pirates of the Caribbean
· Duffy
· Clawhauser from Zootopia
5. Themed Race Weekends
Each runDisney event has its own theme like princesses, villains, duos, or seasonal celebrations, which makes every race feel unique and adds an extra layer of fun to the experience.
6. Incredible Medals
Let’s be honest, the medals are a huge motivator. They’re large, incredibly detailed, and often interactive, making them some of the most impressive race medals out there.
7. Costumes Encouraged
Unlike most races, dressing up is part of the fun! Runners go all out in creative Disney-inspired outfits, adding to the energy and entertainment along the course.
8. Something for Everyone
With race distances ranging from kids races to 5Ks, 10Ks, 10-milers, half marathons, full marathons, and even challenges, there’s truly something for every age and fitness level.
9. Early Morning Magic
Yes, the wake-up calls are early (I usually set my alarm for 2:40 am), but running through the parks before and as the sun rises is a magical payoff. And when the race is over, you still have a full day ahead of you!
10. Turn It into a Full Vacation
A runDisney weekend is the perfect excuse to turn your race into a full Disney getaway including park time, resort pools, dining options, and more. I recommend using the race weekend as your pre-cruise stay and then hopping on the most magical sailing at sea to relax after!
runDisney weekends are something special and memorable whether you’re chasing a personal best, walking your first 5K, or simply soaking in the magic mile by mile. While I’m not able to secure race bibs for clients, I do make sure to send out timely reminders so you’re ready the moment registration opens.
