Skagway is a town steeped in Gold Rush history—rich with stories of those who risked everything in search of fortune. Today, one of the most iconic ways to experience that history is aboard the White Pass & Yukon Railway, a must-do excursion for visitors arriving by cruise ship.
Conveniently, the train depot is just a short and easy 5–10 minute walk from port, making this adventure as seamless as it is unforgettable.
Step Back in Time on the Railway
Climbing aboard this vintage railcar feels like stepping into the past. As the train winds through the mountains, your guide brings the Klondike Gold Rush to life with vivid storytelling and fascinating details about the people who once traveled this rugged terrain.
Pro Tip: Sit on the left side of the train on your way up. Most of the key sights—and the stories that go with them—are best viewed from this side, allowing you to fully experience each moment as it’s being described.
Originally established in 1900, this railway served as a critical route for prospectors heading to the gold fields. Hearing about the sheer determination (and physical effort!) required—hauling supplies by horse or on foot before the railway existed—adds a whole new level of appreciation for the journey.
Scenery That Feels Almost Unreal
If you’re visiting during the summer months, prepare to be amazed. The landscapes along this route are nothing short of breathtaking—towering peaks, lush valleys, and dramatic drop-offs that feel like something out of a dream.
At an elevation of approximately 2,800 feet, the train enters the White Pass Tunnel, a narrow, 250-foot passage carved through the mountain. As you move through the darkness, keep your camera ready—the moment you see that first glimpse of light on the other side is unforgettable.
One of the highlights along the way is the Old Cantilever Trestle, completed in 1901. Once considered the tallest structure of its kind, it has since been replaced—but remains one of the most incredible photo opportunities on the journey.
At the summit—near the border of Canada and about 20 miles from Skagway—the train pauses before making its return trip back to town.
Where to Eat After Your Excursion
After your ride, head over to the historic Red Onion Saloon for a casual and memorable meal.
Once known as Skagway’s most famous brothel during the Gold Rush, it’s now a lively restaurant filled with quirky décor—think vintage photos and even bedpans lining the walls. You can also take a guided tour to learn more about its colorful past.
The menu is simple but satisfying, featuring soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps, and pizza. Service is efficient, even during busy times—but be prepared for a wait due to its popularity.
Insider Tip: Check out the courtyard in the back. It’s first-come, first-served, with a more relaxed atmosphere. While the menu is limited there, it’s a great spot for a quick bite and drink—especially if you’re lucky enough to catch some live music.
Plan Your Alaska Adventure
From rich history to jaw-dropping scenery, the White Pass & Yukon Railway is truly one of the highlights of any Alaska cruise itinerary. It’s the perfect blend of storytelling, scenery, and ease—ideal for travelers of all ages.
When you’re ready to experience the beauty of Alaska’s Last Frontier, I’d love to help you plan every detail.
