The Treasure of Being Prepared: Travel Tips for Peace of Mind

Travel is meant to be magical and carefree, but sometimes life throws unexpected challenges our way. No one wants to think about an emergency happening at home while you’re away—yet it can happen.

As I write this, I’m sailing aboard the Disney Treasure and navigating an unexpected situation with one of my children at home. It’s a reminder that preparation is essential. Here are a few important steps you can take before traveling, so you’ll have peace of mind no matter what arises.

Protect Yourself with Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is the ultimate safety net. Depending on your policy, it may cover cancellations, medical needs while abroad, delayed flights, lost luggage, or even emergency travel home.

Some guests choose coverage through their travel supplier (like Disney Cruise Line), while others purchase through a third party. I personally keep an annual policy through AIG/Travel Guard. It’s a small investment for a great deal of reassurance.

Still wondering if it’s right for you? Ask me—I’ve seen first-hand how this protection can make all the difference.

Always Carry a Passport

If you’re leaving the country, bring your passport—even if your cruise line allows you to sail with just a driver’s license and birth certificate. Should an emergency arise, only a passport will allow you to fly home from a foreign port. Having it with you brings incredible peace of mind.

Stay Connected

Check Your Mobile Service

Contact your phone provider before you leave to confirm international coverage or purchase a temporary plan. If service isn’t possible, be sure your family knows how to reach you.

Plan for Internet Access

Make sure at least one person in your travel party has internet service. Let your loved ones know which apps or platforms (like Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp) are best to reach you while you’re away.

Know Where to Turn Onboard

If an emergency arises at home, visit Guest Services right away. The crew can connect you with the resources you need—whether that’s a shore-to-ship phone line, complimentary calls from the ship, or help sending important messages. Disney’s Cast Members are there to support you.

Provide Authorization for Care

Before you travel, prepare a notarized letter authorizing your child’s caregiver to seek medical attention on your behalf. Some hospitals may require additional documentation, so taking this step in advance helps avoid stressful delays.

Communicate Clearly with Medical Staff

If you’re contacted by medical professionals back home, let them know your travel status and any communication limitations (such as ship departure times or Wi-Fi access). That clarity ensures they can reach you when needed.

Travel is about creating lasting memories, and with a little preparation, you can focus on the joy of your journey while knowing you’re ready for the unexpected. I’m here to guide you through every step of planning—not just the magical details, but the practical ones too.

Disclaimer: The sailing mentioned in this article was purchased at a publicly available rate. Travel insurance was also purchased at standard rates, and coverage may vary by supplier and state of residence. Please review all policies carefully to ensure they meet your personal needs.

Planning a vacation can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. I’m here to guide you through the details so you can focus on what truly matters—creating incredible memories with the people you love. If you're ready to experience a Disney cruise, I’d love to help you plan every step of the way.
