Castaway Cay: A Private Oasis Waiting Just for You
A First-Timer’s Guide to Disney Cruise Line

Castaway Cay is, hands down, the highlight of a Disney Cruise for most of my clients.
There’s something truly special about stepping off the ship and onto Disney’s own private island—knowing that everything around you has been thoughtfully designed for comfort, fun, and that unmistakable Disney magic. Whether you’re traveling with little ones, teens, or enjoying some adults-only time, Castaway Cay delivers one of those “this is why we booked this cruise” days.
Spending the day on this 1,000-acre Caribbean island means pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear water, palm trees swaying in the breeze, and your favorite drink in hand. But Castaway Cay is much more than a beach day—it’s an experience.
Here’s a peek at what’s waiting for you.
Family Fun & Kids’ Favorites
Pelican Plunge
Pelican Plunge is a floating, 2,400-square-foot water play area just offshore from the Family Beach. It features:
Two waterslides (including a corkscrew slide and a 140-foot open-air slide)
Water cannons
A giant dump bucket that soaks guests every few minutes
This area is incredibly popular, so I recommend heading there earlier in the day before lines build up.
Scuttle’s Cove
Scuttle’s Cove is Castaway Cay’s kids club for children ages 3–12. Supervised by the same Disney counselors from the ship, this area includes:
A soft wet deck with pop jets and geysers
Bubblers and splash features
A themed whale-bone excavation play area
Parents love that kids can enjoy Castaway Cay independently while they relax nearby.
Da Shade Game Pavilion (Tweens)
Designed for kids ages 11–13, Da Shade is a fully shaded, supervised area near the Family Beach featuring:
Table tennis
Foosball
Billiards
Basketball
It’s a great hangout for tweens who want independence without being far from the action.
Hide Out (Teens)
The Hide Out is exclusively for teens ages 14–17. It’s the perfect chill zone for lounging, meeting new friends, and snapping those must-have vacation photos—while still being supervised by Disney counselors.
Explore the Island
Go for a Bike Ride
One of the best ways to explore Castaway Cay is by bike. Winding nature trails take you through lush landscapes and quiet corners of the island you might otherwise miss.
Bikes are available in multiple sizes
Training wheels are available for younger riders
Rentals incur a small additional fee charged to your stateroom
For nature lovers, this is often a highlight of the day.
Run (or Walk) the Castaway Cay 5K
This relaxed, family-friendly 3.1-mile course is a favorite tradition for many cruisers.
Great for runners and walkers
Best done early before crowds build
Participants receive a small token of completion
Guests must be age 10+
It’s also a wonderful way to see the island in its quieter morning hours.
Serenity Bay: Adults-Only Paradise
Tucked away on the far side of the island, Serenity Bay is Castaway Cay’s adults-only beach—and it truly lives up to its name.
Here you’ll find:
Calm, clear waters
Hammocks, lounge chairs, and umbrellas
A peaceful, crowd-free atmosphere
You can even book an open-air massage under the palm trees while enjoying the ocean breeze. These book quickly, so advance reservations are strongly recommended.
Dining & Drinks on the Island
Barbecue Lunch
Beach day perfection wouldn’t be complete without great food—and Castaway Cay delivers.
The BBQ buffet is served at:
Cookies BBQ (near Family Beach)
Cookies Too (farther down Family Beach)
Serenity Bay BBQ (adults-only)
Buffet service typically ends at 2:00 p.m., with boxed lunches available afterward.
Pro Tip: The food at Serenity Bay BBQ is exceptional. It’s worth sending one adult to grab plates and bring them back to the family.
Cocktails & Beverages
Several island bars serve specialty drinks, beer, and cocktails—including the fan-favorite Konk Kooler, a tropical rum punch.
Drink purchases can be charged directly to your stateroom account, so there’s no need to carry cash.
Character Meet & Greets
Yes—your favorite Disney characters join you on the island, dressed in beachwear!
Characters appear throughout Castaway Cay, and lines are often much shorter than onboard. Keep your camera ready—you’ll find them popping up in unexpected places.
Excursions & Adventures (Additional Cost)
If you’re craving adventure, Castaway Cay offers a variety of Port Adventures, including:
